Hiking Big Cedar and Kennedy Falls

kennedy falls north vancouver

One of the things that I love the most about living in British Columbia, is the variety of the hiking trails. You have so many options that it’s crazy - from shorter, 30 minute walks around the river bend to hikes that take multiple days.

Last weekend our small group of 4 went outdoors to enjoy beautiful sunny day, to experience Big Cedar and Kennedy Falls. To be honest we decided the hike on the same week - Vancouver & always changing weather forecast can sometimes make it a bit hard to make plans well in advance. Of course being outdoors is matter of different things such as clothing, but you may not want to find yourself sliding down with the mud. Or at least I wouldn’t prefer that.

But let me give you the specifics of the hike!

Big Cedar and Kennedy Falls Trail

Where?

📍North Vancouver, BC, Canada

How long?

⏱️ Based on All Trails, the hike is approx. 10km, around 4-6 hours out & back depending how you feel. My only advice is, that just make sure you get back to the parking spot before sunset.

The Kennedy Falls are in the halfway, so after chilling a bit and taking in the view, you simply turn back and walk back the same route. I don't usually like out and back hikes, I’m more of a loop-kinda-girl but this hike felt different other way around. Probably because of all the small water crossings and other fun stuff, that give hike variety.

How to get there?

🚗 Parking is located at the main lot for Mount Fromme (4753-4757 Mountain Hwy, North Vancouver, BC V7K 2K7). It gets busy, so be early! You can also take a bus 210, but then it's 1km more walking each way.

My rating? - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hike was fun - I would say moderate, but technical. As hike is off-the-beaten path you’ll get muddy if it has rained. You also need to watch your step with all the rootstock and rocks along the way. There are few parts where you also have to climb over a fallen tree, which is super fun and you can really test your balance.

Other stuff to remember

Hiking poles might be helpful, but not necessary. I did the hike with my trail runners and they were all right - although pink color took a hit, but that was expected. Luckily shoes are meant to be cleaned afterwards! But no matter which shoes you wear, please make sure soles have a good grip as it can get slippery and you really need to be able to balance in some of the parts.

As we did this experience this trail in March, it wasn’t too busy - in the beginning there were many bikers, but as the path moved forward their route took other way. I would assume that if doing this hike over the summer months it can get super busy and also expect to sweat! We actually loved the cooler temperatures and for us +10C with little bit of sunshine was perfect weather.
